What is ADSL?

ADSL access is based on Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), a new super-fast modem technology that turns an ordinary telephone line into a multi-tasking access medium. Telkom's ADSL access service will provide you with data transmission to your PC at significantly higher speeds.

What are the benefits of ADSL access?

Telkom's ADSL access service will expand the power of your existing telephone line, providing an ultra-fast, dedicated link from your home or office to the Internet. With Telkom's ADSL access service, a single phone line becomes a true multi-tasking tool, allowing you to surf the Internet while talking on the phone or sending a fax at the same time.

Your ADSL access bandwidth will not be affected if you are simultaneously using the phone or sending a fax. Telkom's ADSL access service will offer an always-available connection with no dial-up necessary, no more waiting to establish a connection and no more busy signals. You will not be billed for your connection time when you make use of Telkom’s ADSL access service to surf the Internet. Telkom’s ADSL access service costs a flat rate monthly fee.

Prices

How will I be billed for my Telkom ADSL access service?

You will be billed on your normal monthly Telkom telephone account for all components of the Telkom ADSL access service. The ADSL related prices are incremental (over and above) to your existing telephone monthly line rental and telephone calls. The following line entries will appear on your bill once you subscribed:

You will have the option to pay for your ADSL modem once-off or over a six-month period. A call out charge will apply should you require Telkom's assistance for desktop support at your premises after your ADSL installation was successfully completed.

How do I establish whether or not my exchange is ADSL enabled?

Your exchange must be ADSL enabled.

Will I need special equipment like an ADSL modem to make my Telkom ADSL access service work?

Yes, you will need an ADSL modem and a surge protector. You have a choice to obtain your ADSL modem and surge protector from Telkom or an external supplier of your choice.

Only specific ADSL modems will be compatible with Telkom’s network. The following is a list of ADSL modems that will be compatible with Telkom’s network and have obtained ICASA type approval please click here.

It is important to note that the provision of Telkom's ADSL access service is subject to network availability, distance, copper quality and line sync speed limitations. Telkom would therefore advise you not to purchase an ADSL modem prior to confirmation that service can be provided.

Telkom will provide a one-stop service with regard to installation. Once your order was received and validated as feasible, Telkom will activate the network.

Telkom will also install an ADSL modem that includes a surge protector and load the required ADSL software on your PC, at your premises.

How do I establish whether or not my PC meets the ADSL access minimum PC requirements?

To establish whether or not your PC meets the ADSL access minimum PC requirements you need to download the Telkom ADSL access PC qualification software.

It is important to note that other factors like network availability, line length, copper quality and line sync speed will determine whether or not Telkom can provide you with ADSL access. Telkom would therefore advise you not to upgrade your PC prior to obtaining confirmation that the ADSL access service can be provided.

This test software will provide you with confirmation on whether or not your PC qualifies. Should your PC not qualify the test result sheet will provide you with detail on what element of your PC will require upgrade to enable you to qualify for Telkom's ADSL access service.

Telkom would therefore advise you not to purchase an ADSL modem or upgrade your PC prior to confirmation that service can be provided. Telkom can not guarantee the bandwidth throughput achieved when you surf the Internet utilizing an ADSL access line.

Telkom accepts no liability for any loss or damages to the property or equipment of the customer arising out of the provision, installation or maintenance of Telkom's ADSL access service.

Telkom can not guarantee the provision of the requested service upon the receipt of a telephonic or electronic order. You will be formally notified after receipt of an order on whether or not the ADSL access service can be provided.
